Re: Question: Can one oppose the war and "support the troops" at the same time?Posted by Megan Day on April 03, 2003 at 06:13:22: In Reply to: Question: Can one oppose the war and "support the troops" at the same time? posted by John on March 21, 2003 at 04:50:58: As we know, this stems from the terrible reception that returning Nam vets received - they were reviled, yelled at ("Baby killers!"), spit on, etc. There seems to be an implied connection between present-day anti-war activists and those of that era. Everyone seems to be forgetting that this attitude resulted from the horrors of the Mi Lai massacre and other atrocities that we KNEW were conducted by American troops. It was NOT a direct result of American involvement in the conflict per se. I myself am extremely tired of having to qualify my pro-peace position with "but I support the troops" as if it is some kind of pledge not to be rude to anyone in uniform. I don't support what they are doing because I do not fundamentally support war. But these are jobs that they have chosen to do and they must do them to the best of their ability. I don't understand why anyone wants to become a soldier - but then, I don't understand why anyone wants to become a proctologist either. I would prefer some other terminology other then "support". Any ideas??
